It runs on the same indexing and ranking systems as classic Google search, just like AI Overviews, the short summary box above normal results.

Query fan-out splits each question into parallel searches, so pages can be cited for sub-questions.

AI Mode went live in German across Germany, Austria and Switzerland on 8 October 2025.

Search Console blends AI Mode clicks into Web totals, and the Generative AI report shows impressions only.

No special markup is needed, because indexability, clear structure and E-E-A-T are your safest levers.

AI Mode vs. AI Overviews: What’s Actually Different

AI Mode is a separate search experience. You open it via google.com/ai, a tab on the results page or the Google app, and it replaces the classic list of results with a full AI-written answer you can keep questioning. AI Overviews is the short summary that shows up automatically above the regular results for some searches. If you need the full picture on those, here’s how AI Overview boxes work and what they do to traffic.

The bigger difference sits under the hood. According to Google’s own explainer on AI Overviews and AI Mode, AI Mode uses query fan-out, a technique that lets it dig deeper into the web than a traditional search.

Query fan-out in one line: AI Mode breaks your question into several sub-questions, runs them as separate searches at the same time, then stitches the results into one coherent answer. Your page can get cited for a sub-question nobody typed into the search box.

Google also notes that the two features may use different models and techniques. The answers and links you see in each will vary, even for the same question.

Aspect

AI Mode

AI Overviews

How it’s triggered

User opens it on purpose (tab, google.com/ai, Google app)

Appears automatically on some regular searches

Format

Full-page AI answer instead of a results list

Short summary box above classic results

How the answer is built

Query fan-out across many parallel searches

One summary for the query entered

Follow-up questions

Built in, context carries over (not always fully)

No conversation: each new query starts fresh

Source links

Web links woven into a longer answer

Links shown alongside the summary, with blue links below

Low-confidence fallback

Shows a classic list of web links instead

Box simply doesn’t appear

Follow-ups deserve a second look. Ask “which one lives longer?” after comparing cats and dogs, and AI Mode stays on cats and dogs. Google admits that context may not fully carry across several follow-ups in a row. It sometimes sticks when the user meant to switch topics.

For your clicks, this is the part that stings: in AI Mode there’s no page of ten blue links to fall back on. The answer does the work the click used to do, and your site only gets a visit when someone wants to verify or go deeper.

Is Google’s AI Search (“AI Suche”) Live in Germany and Austria?

Yes. Google launched AI Mode in Germany, Austria and Switzerland on 8 October 2025, in German, as announced on Google’s German blog. That launch was part of a rollout to 36 new languages and more than 40 new countries and regions.

If someone in your leadership meeting says “it’s been everywhere since August,” this timeline shows why that’s off for DACH:

March 2025: AI Mode launches as a US Search Labs experiment for Google One AI Premium subscribers.

May 2025: Becomes its own tab for all US users at Google I/O, no Labs sign-up required.

August 2025: Expands to 180 countries and territories in English, excluding DACH.

October 2025: DACH launch in German, with French and Italian added in Switzerland.

The base experience is free for anyone using Google Search, no paid plan needed. A Google account only matters for history and personalisation. The more powerful model tier needs a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription and is so far limited to English in selected countries.

One honest caveat for your slide: Google names Austria only jointly with Germany and Switzerland. There’s no separate Austria launch date.

How AI Mode Chooses What to Cite: Confirmed vs. Observed

Google has never published a complete list of factors for AI Mode citations. What you can present with confidence is short. Everything beyond it comes from outside testing, so keep the two apart.

What Google confirms

AI Mode is “rooted in our core Search ranking and safety systems and anti-spam protections,” in Google’s own words. It runs on the regular Search index, so pages must be indexed and eligible for snippets before citation. Google has also said there are no special markup for AI Overviews or AI Mode. The guidance that applies is the familiar E-E-A-T framework: experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness. How Google picks between qualifying pages is deliberately left undisclosed.

What testing suggests

Independent studies of AI Overviews (not confirmed by Google) found that three quarters of URLs rank in the top 10, while a meaningful share comes from further down. These numbers come from AI Overviews data. Applying them to AI Mode is a reasonable inference given the shared ranking systems, but label it as one when you present it.

Does Google Search Console Show AI Mode Clicks?

You can’t separate them. Since an update on 17 June 2025, AI Mode clicks and impressions count toward the normal “Web” totals in the Performance report, and there’s no AI Mode filter, as the Search Console performance documentation spells out. A click on an external link inside AI Mode counts as a click, and impressions and position follow the usual rules.

Follow-ups are where your keyword data gets slippery. Every follow-up is a new query: “All impression, position, and click data in the new response are counted as coming from this new user query.” So the entry question in your data never shows how the whole conversation performed.

Since 31 August 2026, every site also gets the Generative AI performance report, which counts links in AI features. It won’t show up if you have too few impressions or have excluded your site from generative AI features.

AI Mode clicks and impressions blend into Web totals in the Performance report.

The Generative AI report shows impressions by page, country, device and date.

You can’t isolate AI Mode clicks or tie follow-up traffic back to the entry question.

For your Monday chart, flat or rising impressions with falling clicks fit the pattern of AI answers absorbing the click, especially on informational queries. Just be careful when you combine the two reports.

Don’t add them up: The impressions in the Generative AI report are already inside the Web totals of the classic report. Same data, two views. Adding both inflates your numbers.

What to Change on Your Pages Starting Tomorrow

Start with top-ranking pages and work through this order. Each step notes whether it’s standard SEO you’d do anyway or a bet specific to AI answers.

Check indexing and snippet eligibility, because a stray noindex or nosnippet blocks citation (low effort, safe SEO).

Update stale facts: prices, product names, dates, plan details (low effort, safe SEO).

Put the direct answer in the first two sentences under each heading (medium effort, safe SEO).

Name your authors, show real experience and link your sources, which maps to E-E-A-T (medium effort, safe SEO).

Answer your buyer’s next questions on cost, comparison and setup, since fan-out searches sub-questions (medium effort, AI-specific bet).

Prioritise pages already in the top 10, where most observed citations come from (low effort, AI-specific bet).

Skip anything sold as special “AI schema” for AI Mode, since Google says no such markup exists. For a deeper playbook on the summary box itself, see how to get cited in AI Overviews.

Applied to five pages, this list is a sprint. Across 400 URLs, it becomes ongoing work, and two habits keep it manageable whoever does it. Rank by impressions, refresh the top 50 first. Then put the rest on a fixed cycle, with pages that carry prices or product details checked every quarter.

For the staffing itself, you have three realistic routes. An in-house rota gives you the most control but is capped by your team’s hours. An agency retainer brings outside expertise, with costs that grow with page count. An AI content agent such as Claire researches, writes and publishes articles for Google and AI search engines like ChatGPT, which handles volume. Whichever route you take, keep human sign-off on company facts.

If AI Mode Gets Your Company Wrong

Start with feedback. At the bottom of every AI Mode response there are thumbs up and thumbs down icons. After a thumbs down, choose “Share more feedback,” pick a category such as inaccurate, and describe the error. Google links that feedback to your last query and the answer shown. It’s an improvement channel with no case number or promised reply, so take a screenshot with a timestamp first.

Fix the sources. Open the links AI Mode cited and correct what you control, starting with your own pricing and product pages. For outdated third-party pages, contact the publisher.

If the error damages someone’s reputation, there’s now a German court decision worth knowing. On 24 September 2026, the Regional Court of Aachen (LG Aachen, file no. 8 O 268/26) issued a preliminary injunction ordering Google to stop spreading false claims about a doctor in AI Mode, with fines of up to €250,000 for violations. AI Mode had attributed criminal proceedings to him that concerned another person, and Google had refused to remove it after being notified.

The court followed the Regional Court of Munich I (ruling of 28 May 2026, 26 O 869/26): AI answers are Google’s own new statements because the system combines several sources into a new claim, so Google is liable regardless of fault. The Munich ruling itself later became moot through a settlement on appeal, so German case law here is still far from settled.

What the ruling covers: It’s an urgent decision made without a hearing, it isn’t final yet, and Google can object. It rests on personality rights in a clear-cut mix-up of two people. It doesn’t automatically extend to an outdated price or product detail.

What this means for a company in Austria

Both decisions are German first-instance rulings based on German civil and constitutional law, so Austrian courts aren’t bound. No Austrian court has ruled on false AI Mode statements so far. Austria protects personality rights under its own civil code (ABGB), which makes a structurally similar argument conceivable, but no Austrian ruling backs it yet. Treat Aachen as a signal of how a court might reason, and check with an Austrian media-law attorney before you build a strategy on it.

Your practical escalation path: feedback and source fixes for everyday errors, legal counsel when a false claim harms a named person or your company’s reputation.

Checking Your Own Citations and What to Tell Management

No Google tool shows which queries cite you in AI Mode, so test it by hand. Write 15 to 20 questions your buyers actually ask, run them in AI Mode once a month, and log whether you, a competitor or nobody gets cited. Citation share across that set is a number you can repeat every month, next to the impressions figure from the Generative AI report.

In front of management, report AI feature impressions, citation share and leads from organic as one story, with clicks as one line among several. Be honest about expectations: visibility in AI answers builds trust and brand recall earlier in the journey, but the leads it drives are hard to attribute cleanly.

AI Mode is one part of the picture. ChatGPT and Perplexity pick sources their own way, and Google’s assistant has quirks too. This guide on getting cited in Gemini covers that next step.

The Channel Didn’t Disappear, the Click Moved

Impressions without clicks don’t mean your SEO failed. AI Mode is answering the question before anyone reaches your site, and your job shifts to being the source the answer is built on. Before your next leadership meeting, open the Generative AI report and pull your AI impressions. Swap “we don’t know yet” for a real number, then take the five strongest pages from that report through the checklist above.

FAQ

How much of my content can AI Mode quote?

As much as your snippet settings allow, since AI Mode only cites content that’s eligible for a snippet. The nosnippet and max-snippet controls limit what gets quoted. Tighter limits also cut your chances of being cited.

Which files or markup does AI Mode need?

None beyond regular SEO. Google states you don’t need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org markup to appear. Structured data you already use should simply match the visible text on the page.

Will AI Mode eventually replace classic Google search results entirely?

No, not based on anything Google has shown so far. AI Overviews still sits above classic results, and AI Mode itself falls back to a plain list of links when it isn’t confident in an answer.

What does blocking Google-Extended in robots.txt do to my AI Mode visibility?

Nothing for AI Mode or your rankings. Google-Extended controls whether your content is used for Google’s Gemini models, while AI Mode runs on the regular Search index crawled by Googlebot. To leave AI Mode, use the “Search generative AI control” setting in Search Console, which also ends all traffic and impressions from these features.

How is AI Mode different from asking the same question in ChatGPT?

AI Mode builds its answers on Google’s own index and ranking systems, so strong Google SEO carries straight over.
