ChatGPT Agents are AI assistants that handle multi-step tasks on their own: they plan the steps, click their way through websites and hand you a finished result at the end. A regular chat tells you how to do something, an agent does the work itself. Since July 2025, ChatGPT has had a dedicated agent mode built in for exactly that.
Right now OpenAI is rolling out a whole wave of these features, most recently on 9 July 2026 with ChatGPT Work. For marketing teams, that means you can hand off research, a competitive analysis or the monthly report to an agent that does the clicking for you. The interesting question is where this genuinely works today and where you’re better off keeping control yourself.
Whether an agent actually takes work off your plate comes down to a few things worth knowing:
- An agent plans and acts on its own, while regular ChatGPT and Custom GPTs only respond when asked.
- Agent mode is available from the Plus plan up, and Pro accounts get 400 requests a month.
- Gartner expects more than 40 percent of agentic AI projects to be scrapped by the end of 2027.
- For consequential steps like sending email, the agent still needs your explicit sign-off.
What a ChatGPT Agent is, and what sets it apart from Custom GPTs
A ChatGPT Agent is the level where ChatGPT moves from answering to doing. It plans the necessary steps itself, opens a browser, operates tools and works the task through from start to finish. Here’s a useful picture: regular ChatGPT and a Custom GPT are the consultant who explains how to do it. The agent is the intern who just gets it done.
One simple question shows the difference. Ask “How much am I spending on Google Ads?” and ChatGPT walks you through how to find it in your account. The agent logs in, navigates to the right view and tells you the actual number.
What agentic means: the AI pursues a goal on its own across several steps and picks the right tools as it goes, from the browser to the terminal. A Custom GPT waits for your next input at every single step.
Custom GPTs have been around since November 2023, the GPT Store since January 2024, and by early 2024 more than three million of them had been built. A Custom GPT is ChatGPT with fixed instructions and its own knowledge, handy for recurring questions. It can’t act autonomously across multiple tools, and it has no memory that carries beyond a single session. For business accounts, OpenAI is now phasing Custom GPTs out and, since April 2026, replacing them with action-capable Workspace Agents.
| Level | What it does | Autonomy |
|---|---|---|
| Regular ChatGPT | Answers questions and writes text in the chat | Responds to individual prompts |
| Custom GPT | Preconfigured assistant with fixed instructions and knowledge | Answers on request, no memory across sessions |
| ChatGPT Agent | Plans steps, operates browser and tools, carries out tasks | Works through multi-step tasks on its own |
What can ChatGPT agents really do today, and where does it stop?
Since 17 July 2025, ChatGPT’s agent mode has been able to carry out web actions on its own for the first time. Behind it sits a single system that bundles three capabilities into one dedicated virtual computer:
- Operator drives the browser and clicks its way through websites.
- Deep Research gathers information from many sources and pulls it together.
- The virtual computer provides a visual browser, a terminal and API access.
In OpenAI’s own benchmarks, the agent edits Excel files directly and hits around 46 percent on SpreadsheetBench, while Copilot in Excel sits at 20 percent. On the BrowseComp research task, it reaches almost 69 percent. The mode is available in every paid plan from Plus up.
On 9 July 2026, OpenAI followed up with ChatGPT Work, its biggest step so far. Built on GPT-5.6 with Codex integrated, the agent turns a single goal into anything from finished documents and spreadsheets to complete websites, works on a project for hours at a stretch and connects services like Slack and Google Drive through a plugin directory via @-mention.
Where the agent deliberately holds back: OpenAI itself calls the product early-stage and error-prone. Before consequential actions it checks with you, for critical steps like sending email it demands active supervision in Watch Mode, and high-risk actions like bank transfers it refuses outright.
Which marketing tasks a ChatGPT Agent actually takes on
An agent pays off most with recurring click-work that eats your time today. These four in particular:
- Research: the agent searches through sources, pulls out the relevant points and sums them up in a clear structure.
- Competitive analysis: it crawls competitor pages, catches changed prices and messaging and emails you a digest.
- Content drafts: it builds a content calendar and turns out rough drafts for individual posts in series.
- Reporting: it pulls numbers from Analytics and Search Console and builds them into a finished slide deck.
Take competitive analysis as a sample run. You give the agent three competitor URLs and a goal. It opens the pages one after another, compares the new prices and messaging against last week’s and sends a short digest by email every Monday. An SEO report works the same way, except it pulls the data from Google Analytics and Search Console and schedules the slide deck monthly.
OpenAI’s own marketing example: from a single goal, the agent handles an entire campaign workflow, from customer research through the campaign brief and the assets to adapting it for different markets. In its Marketing Academy, OpenAI shows prompts for twelve ad-copy variants or an A/B test decision.
With content drafts, though, the agent’s work rarely ends at the raw text. A usable draft needs fact-checking, structure and polish before it becomes an article that gets cited in AI answers. Reports from early adopters put the time saved for marketing teams at around 45 hours a month. Those figures are outliers from individual vendor and early-adopter cases and show, at best, what’s possible in an ideal scenario.
Where a specialized marketing agent goes further than the generalist
A ChatGPT Agent is a horizontal generalist: broadly useful and ready to go in minutes. A vertical, specialized agent combines domain data with fixed tool access, finishes a complete professional workflow and follows the rules of its field, such as the GDPR. Put another way: one is the fast all-rounder, the other knows your field inside out.
An MIT report from summer 2025 shows why that matters: externally purchased specialist solutions succeed roughly twice as often as in-house builds, around two in three versus one in three, because generic tools like ChatGPT adapt poorly to established company processes. Whether an autonomous agent or a tool stack makes more sense for your team comes down to exactly this question.
In content marketing, a specialized agent like that works the way we do at Claire, for example. The agent researches a topic and writes the article, then publishes it and optimizes it for citation in AI search engines, either in Autopilot or Copilot mode. We’ve walked through how to build that visibility in AI answers in a separate guide.
Reality check: where a ChatGPT Agent still requires human sign-off
As impressive as the progress is, these agents aren’t reliably autonomous yet. Gartner expects more than 40 percent of agentic AI projects to be scrapped again by the end of 2027, on the back of rising costs and unclear business value. Then there’s the “agent washing” phenomenon: out of thousands of vendors, only around 130 deliver genuine agentic capabilities.
Two observations show why the final call should stay with you. In a ZDNet test, the agent managed only one of eight tasks and invented statistics along with studies that don’t exist, a single test, sure, but a clear warning shot. At a Munich agency, it also went ahead and made a restaurant reservation on its own, even though it had promised to act only after sign-off.
Important for DACH teams: without a data processing agreement, ChatGPT Free and Plus aren’t fit for GDPR-compliant business use. The business plans Team and Enterprise, along with the API, offer a DPA and don’t train on your inputs by default. EU data residency has been available for Enterprise and the API since February 2025.
On top of that comes the EU AI Act. Since 2 February 2025, the AI literacy obligation under Article 4 has applied, and from August 2026 the obligations for high-risk systems kick in. For day-to-day marketing, that means something very practical: for anything that goes public or moves money, a human gives the go-ahead before the agent clicks “Send”.
Between time saved and control: how to put agents to work
The real question stopped being whether agents work a while ago. It’s which tasks you can hand off with a clear conscience and which ones keep the last click with you.
A good starting point is a recurring, manageable task with a clear human sign-off, say the monthly report or a weekly competitive analysis. Once that runs cleanly for a few weeks, you’ll trust the agent with bigger jobs too.
For core processes like ongoing content production, it’s worth looking at a specialized agent that masters the whole workflow and builds AI search engines into the result from the start. For experimenting, the generalist does the job fine, and in reliable, day-in day-out operation a specialized agent plays to its strengths.
Frequently asked questions about ChatGPT Agents
What does ChatGPT agent mode cost?
Agent mode isn’t free. It’s included from the Plus plan up. Pro accounts get 400 agent requests a month, the other paid plans get 40. There’s no standalone price just for the agent, since the cost sits inside your ChatGPT subscription.
Does the ChatGPT Agent replace my Custom GPTs?
Yes, for business accounts that’s already underway: OpenAI is phasing Custom GPTs out there and replacing them with action-capable Workspace Agents, introduced in April 2026. A one-click conversion has been announced. For simple, always-identical answers, a configured assistant often stays the leaner choice anyway.
Can the ChatGPT Agent be used in a GDPR-compliant way?
For GDPR-compliant business use, you need Team, Enterprise or the API, because only those come with a data processing agreement and no default training on your inputs. Free and Plus aren’t enough for that. Enterprise and the API have offered EU data residency since February 2025.
How long does a ChatGPT Agent work on a task?
Most tasks in agent mode take five to thirty minutes. The newer ChatGPT Work agent from July 2026 can also work on larger projects for several hours at a stretch, delivering finished documents, spreadsheets or reports along the way.
Can I rely blindly on the results of a ChatGPT Agent?
No, you shouldn’t rely on an agent without human oversight. In tests it has started hallucinating and acted on its own, and OpenAI itself calls the product early-stage. For anything that goes public or moves money, the sign-off belongs to a human.
