Google AI Overviews are AI-generated answer boxes that sit right at the top of the search results, above the first organic listings. They pull the content of several web pages into one answer and link the sources they used right beside it. In Germany, they run under the name “Übersicht mit KI”.
If you’ve just spotted one of these AI boxes above your usual results for the first time, you’re not alone. Since March 2025, the boxes have been rolling out across German-speaking regions too, and for a lot of site owners the first question is what this does to their own traffic.
Whether a box like this stays a harmless bit of extra info or actually costs you clicks comes down to a few details most people never notice:
- Gemini 3 has been merging the answer from several sources into one text since January 2026.
- Around 20 percent of all German keywords now trigger an “Übersicht mit KI”.
- In position 1, the click rate on affected searches falls from 27 to 11 percent.
- More than 99 percent of the pages cited already rank in the organic top 10 anyway.
What does a Google AI Overview look like?
A Google AI Overview almost always follows the same blueprint. At the very top sits an AI-generated answer text that sums up your query in a few sentences, and right beside or below it are the sources Google pulled the answer from.
Look closer and you’ll recognize a box by five recurring elements:
- Answer text: the summary itself, usually two to five sentences, often with a subheading or a short list.
- Linked sources: tiles or links showing the favicon and domain name of the cited pages.
- “Show more”: a button that expands the collapsed box to full length.
- Follow-up questions: suggested next questions that dig deeper into the topic.
- Link preview: hover over a source and Google fades in a small page preview.
An example makes it tangible. You type in “How do I descale my coffee machine?” At the top you first read a short set of instructions in three or four steps. The classic blue links only appear below that. Next to the instructions Google shows three to five sources, often a how-to blog and a fitting YouTube video, plus it suggests follow-up questions like “Can I use vinegar instead of descaler?”
Übersicht mit KI: This is what the AI Overview is called in the German Google interface. It means exactly the same feature. Google simply uses the translated name across German-speaking regions.
What technology powers AI Overviews?
AI Overviews run on Gemini, Google’s own AI language model. Since January 2026, the default there has been Gemini 3, the current generation of the model.
To answer a question in the box, Google breaks your query into several sub-questions and searches for matching content for each one in parallel. Gemini then assembles a single, coherent answer from those results.
Query Fan-Out: Google fans a single query out into many related sub-questions, finds its own results for each, and merges everything into one answer. That’s why an Overview sometimes cites pages that don’t directly rank for the original question at all.
Because Gemini combines several sources, an Overview rarely reproduces the wording of any single page. It phrases its own version, one that’s based on the content of the cited web pages. For you as an author, that means your content gets processed and repackaged before it reaches the user.
Which searches trigger AI Overviews, and which don’t?
AI Overviews mainly show up on informational searches, meaning genuine knowledge questions. The more specific and the longer the question, the more likely Google is to slot in a box.
Typical triggers are fully phrased questions, the searches that start with “how” or “why”. For “How do I make a sourdough starter?” Google almost always serves an Overview, because the answer sums up cleanly.
The box appears less often on transactional or local searches. Someone typing “buy running shoes” or “dentist near me” wants to act or to find a place, and there’s little room for an explanatory summary there. On sensitive topics like health or finance, the so-called YMYL topics (Your Money or Your Life), Google has so far held back noticeably in Germany.
Where are Google’s AI Overviews live: DACH vs. the US?
In the US, AI Overviews have been in regular operation since May 2024, and in German-speaking regions officially since March 26, 2025. The March 2025 launch covered the entire DACH region.
You can only see the boxes while logged in and aged 18 or over. The exact launch and the languages differ by market:
| Market | Launch | Languages |
|---|---|---|
| United States | May 2024 | English |
| Germany | March 26, 2025 | German and English |
| Switzerland | March 26, 2025 | four languages |
Since October 7, 2025, the DACH region has also had AI Mode, a separate, conversational search experience that goes beyond the single answer box.
AI Overview, Featured Snippet, or AI search engine: what’s the difference?
A Featured Snippet quotes a single web page almost word for word, while an AI Overview phrases its own, new answer from several sources. AI search engines like ChatGPT or Perplexity, in turn, run entirely outside the classic Google results list.
The four formats side by side:
| Format | Data basis | Location | Answer type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Featured Snippet | one page, verbatim | inside the Google results list | text excerpt |
| AI Overview | several pages, summarized | above the Google results | AI summary |
| AI Mode | several pages, conversational | its own Google view | chat with follow-ups |
| ChatGPT / Perplexity | own index or crawl | outside Google | chat answer |
The difference sounds technical, but for you as a site owner it really matters. An AI Overview keeps users inside Google Search, while ChatGPT and Perplexity are their own platforms with their own data. Anyone who wants to appear in all these answers quickly lands on the topic of Answer Engine Optimization, which deals with exactly this mechanism.
What do AI Overviews mean for your website traffic?
For websites, the box mainly means fewer clicks on the affected searches. When users read their answer up in the Overview, they click through to the results below less often, which the industry calls zero-click.
In Germany, according to Sistrix, around 20 percent of all keywords trigger an “Übersicht mit KI”. For pages in position 1, the click rate on such searches drops from about 27 to 11 percent, and an analysis by wordsmattr measures a decline of 17.8 percent across all affected keywords. Newer data from the German market also confirms the drop in click numbers.
One single analysis even puts the monthly click loss in Germany at around 265 million clicks. That figure comes from just one source, though, and is better read as a rough order of magnitude.
US and global studies show similar patterns, but they only transfer to the German market to a limited extent. The Pew Research Center measures a drop in click rate from 15 to 8 percent in the US, and Ahrefs reports declines of 34.5 and 58 percent depending on the analysis.
Which pages does an AI Overview cite?
Google pulls the sources almost exclusively from pages that already rank up front. More than 99 percent of citations come from the organic top 10, and most boxes show four to five sources. Strikingly often, big platforms like YouTube or Reddit sit among them, frequently rounded out by Wikipedia.
What gets cited is whatever answers a question clearly and compactly, and whoever Google trusts to have mastered the topic. Strong rankings and a clean, clearly answering structure raise your chances of showing up in the box.
Important for DACH: On May 28, 2026, the Munich Regional Court (Landgericht München I) ruled that Google is liable for false statements in its AI answers. The court thereby treats an Overview as the company’s own statement, one whose accuracy Google has to answer for.
From answer box to visibility of your own
Google AI Overviews turn the logic of search on its head a little: anyone who used to optimize for clicks now also thinks in citations. A top spot costs you part of your direct clicks and at the same time makes you visible as a named source next to the AI answer.
For you, that means good classic rankings stay the entry ticket, in AI search too. The more interesting question is how you turn a strong ranking into an actual citation, for instance with clearly extractable answers and visible authority on the topic.
How to deliberately tune your content for citability belongs to the field of Generative Engine Optimization. If you want to think about Google’s AI and classic search together, the guide to AI and Google ranking is the logical next step.
Common questions about Google’s AI Overviews
What’s the difference between Google’s AI Overview and AI Mode?
The AI Overview is a single answer box above the normal search results. AI Mode is a separate, conversational view where you can ask follow-ups like in a chat. Both draw on Gemini, but AI Mode goes beyond the one-off summary and runs an ongoing question-and-answer conversation.
Does an AI Overview appear on every Google search?
No, far from every search. In Germany, around 20 percent of all keywords trigger an “Übersicht mit KI”, mostly informational knowledge questions. On transactional searches like product purchases or local queries the box usually stays away, as it does on many sensitive health and finance topics.
Since when has “Übersicht mit KI” existed in Germany?
Since March 26, 2025, Google has officially served “Übersicht mit KI” across German-speaking regions. In the US, AI Overviews have been running since May 2024. In Germany you can only see them while logged in and aged 18 or over, in either German or English.
Do I still get traffic if my page is cited in an AI Overview?
Yes, but usually less than before the boxes, because many users already find their answer in the summary. Some still click through to the linked sources, and your brand name appears visibly right next to the AI answer. The citation therefore pays off more for visibility than for pure click counts.
Are Google AI Overviews the same as ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a standalone AI platform with its own data, while an AI Overview appears directly in Google Search above the results. With Google you stay on a classic results page with an AI summary on top. ChatGPT and Perplexity replace that results list entirely with a chat answer.
