Measuring AI Search Visibility When Traffic Isn’t the KPI

Measuring AI Search Visibility When Traffic Isn't the KPI
Table of contents

How do you measure visibility in AI search when traffic is not the main KPI? Track how often AI engines mention and cite your brand on your buyers’ real questions, and how that share moves against competitors. If sessions dropped while you keep showing up in ChatGPT, you’re in good company.

  • Citation Share, Share of Voice and Presence Rate across four AI engines replace sessions as core metrics.
  • Fifteen to 30 prompts checked weekly against two or three competitors show a trend within a month.
  • Otterly.AI starts at $29 a month and Peec AI near €85, while enterprise setups reach $1,500 or more.
  • Assisted conversions, branded-search lift and direct signups prove pipeline impact while AI answers quietly remove clicks.

How to Measure AI Search Visibility When Traffic Is Not the Main KPI

Four metrics carry the story once clicks fade.

  • Presence Rate shows whether you’re part of the conversation in the first place.
  • Share of Voice tells you how much of the conversation you own compared with competitors.
  • Citation/Mention Share reveals whether engines trust your pages enough to reference them.
  • Prompt Coverage shows which buyer questions you still have zero presence on.
MetricDefinitionWhat it shows
Presence RatePercentage of AI answers on your prompt set in which your brand appears at all.Whether you’re part of the conversation in the first place.
Share of VoiceYour brand mentions as a share of all brand mentions recorded in those answers. How much of the conversation you own compared with competitors.
Citation/Mention ShareShare of answers that name your brand (mention) or link your domain as a source (citation), tracked separately.Whether engines trust your pages enough to reference them.
Prompt CoverageShare of prompts in your set where you appear in at least one tracked engine.Which buyer questions you still have zero presence on.

Presence Rate and Share of Voice follow the definitions Peec AI uses, so your spreadsheet numbers stay comparable if you move to a tool later.

Mention or citation? A mention is your brand name inside the answer text. A citation is a link to your domain in the answer’s sources. Log both separately, since engines often name a brand without linking it, or link a page without naming the company.

All four numbers are calculated on your own prompt set, the fixed list of questions you check every week. Swap half the prompts and every metric jumps, which makes the trend worthless. Freeze the set between quarterly reviews and log every change you make.

Building a Prompt Set You Can Actually Maintain

A maintainable prompt set holds 15 to 30 real buyer questions, runs on two or three engines and lives in one log with a fixed format. Five steps get you there in an afternoon.

  1. Collect prompts from sales call notes and support tickets, mixing category, comparison and problem questions.
  2. Pick your buyers’ engines: ChatGPT and AI Overviews by default, plus Perplexity or Gemini if needed.
  3. Log one row per prompt, engine and date: mention (yes/no), position, cited URL, competitors named.
  4. Tag the two or three competitors you lose deals to, plus any other brand that appears.
  5. Spot the trend with a four-week rolling average to smooth single-answer wobbles.

Prompts that never mention you are the most useful rows in the sheet. They show where content is missing, and the six phases of the GEO framework walk through how to turn those gaps into pages engines want to quote.

What GEO Tracking Tools Cost Right Now

Entry-level GEO tracking runs from about €20 to €95 a month, and enterprise systems reach $1,500 a month or more. The price mostly scales with the number of prompts and engines you track, plus how many brands, countries and seats you add.

ToolEntry price (at time of writing)Prompts / enginesNote
Otterly.AI$29/month (Lite)15 prompts on four engines (ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot)Standard plan $189 for 100 prompts. Gemini, Claude and AI Mode are paid add-ons.
Peec AI~€85–95/month (Starter)50 prompts on three models of your choice, tracked dailyUnlimited users. Pro runs ~€205–245 for 150 prompts.
Rankscalefrom ~€20/monthOne consolidated visibility score with benchmarkingCheapest entry in 2026 market overviews, with a lighter feature set.
AthenaHQFree tier, Starter $295/monthCredit pool (1 credit = 1 prompt on 1 LLM)Aimed at growth teams focused on citation analysis.
Profound~$99/month50 prompts, ChatGPT onlyGrowth plan ~$399 for three engines. Enterprise priced individually.
Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit~$99–140/month per domainMainly AI Overviews and ChatGPTExtends an existing Semrush dashboard. Other engines are covered more thinly.

Treat every figure as a starting price. Monthly and annual billing differ, and add-on engines change the total, which Otterly.AI’s pricing page spells out for its Gemini and Claude modules. Peec AI and Rankscale list in euros while the others list in dollars. Check each vendor’s pricing page before you commit. For a small team, a plan with 15 to 50 prompts on ChatGPT and AI Overviews covers the starter set from the previous section. Starting Without a Paid Tool

You can run the whole method in a spreadsheet this week for zero cost. Manual tracking takes about an hour a week, and the baseline you build shows what a paid tool later needs to beat.

  1. Copy the log columns from the prompt-set section into a Google Sheet and add a date column.
  2. Pick your 10 most commercial prompts, the ones closest to a buying decision.
  3. Every week on the same day, run each prompt logged out on ChatGPT and Google, and log results.

Connecting AI Visibility to Pipeline and Leads

AI visibility shows up in pipeline through three signals: assisted conversions, branded-search lift and self-reported signups. None of them needs a data team, just a few settings you probably already have access to. The first thing to know is why your referral numbers look so thin.

Good to know: A buyer who reads your name in a ChatGPT answer and types it into Google three days later lands as branded organic or direct traffic. GA4 gives the AI engine no credit for that visit, so the referral count alone undersells what your visibility is doing.

Assisted conversions come first. In GA4, AI engines appear as referral sources such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com. Build a segment for them and check conversion paths where they appear at any touchpoint, including first touch. The volume is usually small, so watch the trend and the conversion rate of those sessions.

Branded-search lift is your second signal. Filter Search Console for queries containing your brand name and chart impressions monthly. When your Presence Rate climbs, rising branded impressions a few weeks later are the downstream effect you’d expect to see.

Self-reported signups close the loop. Add a “How did you hear about us?” field to your demo or signup form with an option for AI assistants like ChatGPT or Perplexity. Sales teams get this answer on calls anyway, so ask them to log it.

Put all three next to your Presence Rate, and you have a story a CFO can follow.

A Starter Scorecard Your Team Can Run Tomorrow

One sheet with eight rows is enough to report AI visibility to leadership every month. The weekly rows take one person about an hour, and the monthly rows pull from tools you already use.

If nobody on your team will own the weekly run, the AI Visibility Check gives you a starting snapshot of how often ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity name your brand and which alternatives they recommend in your place.

Scorecard numbers only move when engines find pages worth quoting on the prompts in your set. Those pages open with a direct answer, carry specific facts and use a structure that’s easy to lift. Claire is an autonomous content agent built for that job: it writes and publishes blog content, then keeps optimizing it, so fresh pages keep arriving for the questions where your Prompt Coverage is still zero.

Four mistakes break this kind of tracking more often than any tool choice:

  • Too few prompts: with five questions, one lucky answer swings your Presence Rate by 20 points.
  • Tracking only your own brand: without competitors in the log, Share of Voice can’t be calculated.
  • Editing the prompt set every week: each change resets the trend line.
  • Watching one engine: a gain in ChatGPT can hide a loss in AI Overviews.

Visibility Is a Trend Line

A single Presence Rate of 40 percent tells your manager very little. Twelve weeks of that number climbing while your main competitor’s Share of Voice flattens is what turns AI visibility into a report people trust. So fill in the scorecard once this week with your own 10 to 15 prompts, by hand. After four weekly runs you’ll have a baseline, a first trend and a clear sense of whether a paid tool is worth the budget.

FAQ: Measuring AI Search Visibility

Should I track my prompts in more than one language or country?

Usually, if you sell in more than one market. AI answers shift with language and location, so a German buyer’s prompt can surface different brands than the English version. Start with a small separate set per core market, and Peec AI’s Advanced plan adds multi-country tracking once the spreadsheet gets crowded.

Is there a benchmark for what a “good” citation or presence rate looks like, or do I have to set my own baseline?

No, there’s no reliable cross-industry benchmark yet, so set your own baseline. Your competitors are the practical yardstick: if you appear in 30 percent of answers and the category leader appears in 60, that gap is your target.

Which AI engines matter most to track first if I can only afford one tool?

ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews are the safest first pair, since nearly every tracking tool covers both by default. Otterly.AI’s Lite plan adds Perplexity and Copilot on top for $29 a month, which suits a first paid step.

Can I mix manual tracking with a paid tool, or should I switch fully once I have budget?

Yes, mixing works well. Let the tool handle the daily or weekly volume, and keep a small manual check on your five most commercial prompts. Reading those answers yourself shows tone and framing that a score can’t capture.
